Seaton Town Council – Casual Vacancies

THERE ARE NO ELECTIONS CURRENTLY PENDING.

In accordance with Section 87 of the Local Government Act 1972 Seaton Town Council has to give notice when casual vacancies occur.

When a councillor’s seat becomes vacant Seaton Town Council is required to notify East Devon District Council and display a ‘Notice of Vacancy’ as soon as practicable. The Notice explains that an election can be called, if a request is made in writing to East Devon District Council by 10 electors from Seaton area, within 14 working days of the date of the Notice. If an election is called it must usually be held within 60 days of the notice. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, if a casual vacancy occurs and a request is received any election will not be held before May 2021.

If no request is received then Seaton Town Council may co-opt individuals to the vacant seats. This means that the Town Council can choose who it wishes to appoint to fill the seat, rather than holding an election.
